Understanding the Basics of Grant Development

Target Audience: Government agencies, public school systems, charter schools, private schools, charter school organizations and nonprofit organizations.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the training is:

  • To help participants become knowledgeable of grant funding opportunities made available through public and private grant funding sources and how to locate and track relevant grant opportunities from Federal, state, local and private sources;
  • To understand how to plan and write successful grant proposals from start-to-finish; and
  • How to organize and coordinate in-house expertise to accomplish effective grant development.

LEARNER OUTCOMES: Participants will learn:

  • Where to find grant funding opportunities from multiple funding sources: Federal government, state government and private (foundation and corporate) sources;
  • How to identify, analyze and evaluate grant funding opportunities for public school systems, charter schools, private schools, charter school organizations, and nonprofit organizations and agencies;
  • What to consider before applying for grant funds;
  • To understand the critical differences between competitive grant funding and formula grant funding and the impact of those differences on grant proposal development;
  • How to avoid being intimidated by typical Federal Requests for Proposals (RFPs) and how to identify the crucial information contained in them;
  • How to write convincing grant proposals that meet funders’ expectation;
  • To understand the purpose of the essential components of most grant proposals and the relationship among the them, including:
    • Abstract/Introduction Statement
    • Needs/Problem Statement
    • Objectives
    • Methodology/Management Plan/Logic Model
    • Evaluation
    • Line Item Budget
    • Narrative Budget
  • How to identify and understand the purpose of various government grant programs, the legislative intent and how to avoid “fatal flaws;
  • How to customize a grant proposal to match a funder’s interests;
  • To understand and appreciate the major differences between grant proposals submitted to government and foundation or private funders;
  • How to best organize grant development efforts within a public school system, charter school, private school, charter school organization, or nonprofit organization setting and who needs to be involved in what;
  • How to effectively use data sources in grant proposal development;
  • How to determine the key personnel for each grant project;
  • How to organize and manage the grant development process to meet funder deadlines;
  • How to coordinate grant evaluation activities with other evaluation and accountability activities underway in the organization; and
  • To plan for how to obtain required internal agency review and approval, and submit grant proposals in conformity with funder requirements.
