How to Carry out Effective K-12 School-Based Grant Development Activities

Target Audience: Teachers and administrators of K-12 public schools, charter schools and private schools.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the training is:

  • To help teachers and school administrators become knowledgeable of the numerous grant opportunities available for school-based, classroom-based and teacher-based projects from a variety of funders (governments, foundations, and corporations);
  • To help participants learn how to research such funding opportunities;
  • To enable participants to understand and be responsive to funder guidelines; and
  • To teach participants to carry out on-line submission of grant applications.

LEARNER OUTCOMES: Participants will learn:

  • Where to find up-to-date information on available funding for K-12 school-based, classroom-based and teacher-based projects;
  • How to evaluate each funding opportunity and determine when a proposal(s) should be developed and submitted;
  • How to organize and mange the grants information flow to school-based staff (teachers and administrators);
  • How to organize a resource development team at the school site;
  • The basics of grant proposal development (planning and writing);
  • How to improve the success rate of grant proposals submitted by school staff and avoid the common errors and ”fatal flaws” of novice grant writers; and
  • What “strings” are attached to grant funding by various funders and how to deal with them.
